The
Junior Posse currently has 2 chapters ( NW Chapter &
East Chapter)
The
HARRIS COUNTY JUNIOR DEPUTY SHERIFF’S MOUNTED POSSE
is a non-profit youth
equestrian
organization made up of members ranging in age 6 to 18. The
JUNIOR POSSE
originated in 1951
under Sheriff C.V.“Buster” Kern. Sheriff Jack Heard,
Sheriff Johnny Klevenhagen, and Current
Sheriff Tommy Thomas have
continued the
tradition of the JUNIOR POSSE.
The
JUNIOR POSSE
continues to promote and encourage the training of our children not only in the
art of
horsemanship, but in the
many intricate and varied arts of citizenship, sportsmanship, and every day living.
The junior rider, when ready, will ride in the performance drills with
the other riders. Our junior riders and the
riding drill team members ride full size horses. They
practice intricate drills to perform in a variety of different
events.
The
JUNIOR POSSE
participates in many different events throughout the year in Harris
County
and
surrounding cities/counties.
The
JUNIOR POSSE
has an annual pony express ride. Our riders dude up in full uniform, adorn the horses
with their best
riding equipment, and embark on a series of one mile relays which takes them into several
counties. Our riders take with them proclamations of the upcoming Houston Livestock Show and
Rodeo
invitations of all to attend. In a ceremonious gathering on courthouse steps, the
mayor, Sheriff, and County Judge
of each county accept the proclamation and are always
impressed by the showmanship, organization, and maturity
of our county representatives.
The
JUNIOR POSSE
in addition to the pony express ride, participate in numerous events. They perform in
local rodeos,
parades, and other functions. They perform at the Special Olympics and The MS 150 Ride.
On the
average,
the JUNIOR POSSE
attends an event twice a month. When they are
not performing, they are
practicing two to three weekends a month.

If you
think you have what it takes, the JUNIOR POSSE
is
always looking for new members.

THE
JUNIOR POSSE’S
FUTURE
Just like any other organization, the
JUNIOR POSSE has set
several goals.
The JUNIOR POSSE
strives everyday in achieving:
1.
To increase our membership roster in all areas of town.
2.
Public, organization recognition (we want to be what every parent wants their
child to be a part of).
3.
We are planning to participate in community service needs (fundraiser, elderly
programs, disaster relief, and other special needs groups).
4.
To provide incentives to our members for staying in school and off drugs with a
scholarship program.
5.
A Junior Posse funded field trip yearly.
6.
A practice facility (land and arena) which we can call home.
7.
Better equipment and gear for our riders
The
JUNIOR POSSE is not
funded by Harris County. The Harris County Sheriff's Office provides the use of
their name and minimal equipment. The stability comes from the community through
donations and membership dues. The riding members also plan fund raising events every
year to help raise money. As with anything nowadays, it cost money to operate
any organization.
